Wednesday: Creating Original Cloth [Adult]

Discover the potential of creating hand dyed fabric in a variety of ways. We will use a series of different techniques to accomplish this. Silk screen, soy wax resist and a variety of shibori techniques will be explored. Students may use cotton, silk and linen to print on. You can also print on scarves creating your own fashion statement.This class is for beginners as well as continuing students. Additional film can be purchased for $4.50 a sheet.

Materials Needed: Pencil; black pens or markers; sketchpad at least 9”x12”; glue stick; scissors; Duct tape; X-acto knife; found objects with which to create images: these may include junk drawer stuff, plastic lace, keys, non skid pads, leaves, window screen mesh etc.; high contrast photocopies of possible images for screens to fit one of two sizes: full size; 7”x 9” and half size; 3 “x5”. These should be only black and white and are best if done in photoshop and have no gray tones. Drawings, designs, text from newspaper or any other black and white images. “Squeegie-9” Hunt Speedball or plastic spackling spatulas from a hardware store work well too. Rubber gloves; apron; plastic from dry cleaning bags or light weight plastic to wrap fabric for transport; freezer paper; papers such as newsprint or rice paper; fabric - can be 100% cotton, silk, or rayon - washed in hot water. Cotton available in class for $5.00 per yard.

She has had her work published in numerous publications, most recently in the Surface Design Journal where she co-authored an article called, “One Cloth, One Fabric: Whole Cloth Composition.” February of 2009 she was the Artist of the Month on www.jerseyarts.com. She continues to work in her studio, show her art and teach workshops. She is also an enthusiastic member of the docent association of the Princeton University Art Museum.
