Description
Learn the basics of Katazome, the ancient Japanese art of stenciling patterns on fiber with rice paste resist. Students will learn to create and cut patterns for stencils, how to prepare rice paste and how to create a simple indigo vat for dipping their newly stenciled patterns on fiber.
Students should feel comfortable handling an Exacto knife for cutting stencils.

About the Teaching Artist: Maria Maurio is an apparel and textiles designer, an artist, natural dyer, and a chemist. Having grown up in a local family business, she was exposed to the many facets of design as well as salesmanship. Maria went on to study apparel design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City specializing in couture. After a successful career designing for many well know companies in New York City and Philadelphia she opened her atelier in Trenton, New Jersey. Maria creates artisanal quality accessories utilizing hand dyeing, hand block printing, and various other resist methods. The platform for the business is based on eco-friendly, natural dyes and sustainability. Her designs are sold nationally in boutiques and museum stores.
In addition to teaching various fashion design courses at the university level, she lends her time to judge student work for Philadelphia University, Drexel FCCLA.and the
Maria also conducts beginner and master workshops in natural dyeing, indigo and various Japanese resist methods.
