Description

Encaustic painting is a mixed media technique used to add texture to art and much more. Students will be introduced to the medium, learn basic tools and techniques, and come to appreciate the uniqueness and qualities of encaustic art.  Topics will include coloring the encaustic medium, using stencils and layering, transferring images, collage, use in still life painting, and many other techniques. No prior experience is necessary. Come learn about this fascinating technique that dates back to Egyptian times and is still widely used today.
 

Materials List: Gloves; masking tape; cradled wood panels 12x12” (2 per session, total 16); encaustic medium for at least 2 or 3 classes; basic oil pastels; basic small tubes of oil paint; collage materials of your choice

 

About the Teaching Artist: 

Born and trained in Israel, Ifat Shatzky reached her maturity as an artist after moving to the United States in 1998. Shatzky’s medium of choice is painting with oil on gessoed wood panels. Sometimes she incorporates different media and collage techniques in her artwork, which may include wax, wire, oil pastel, charcoal, ink and acrylic crayons. Shatzky’s art is in many private collections in the US and around the world. Shatzky went to school at the following institutions: DeCordova Museum School, Ceramics studies, Lincoln, MA, 2001-2002, B.F.A. in Art Education, Ramat Hasharon School for the Arts, Israel, 1988-1991, Art classes, Jordan Valley College, Israel, 1986-1988.
