About the Teaching Artist: Theresa Pfarr works to conflate the cultural, commercial and personal, through a process of painting and collaging personal and appropriated images into her paintings and works on paper. Influenced by celebrity crisis, celebrity obsession, plastic surgery, and fashion imagery, her paintings convey the anxiety of inhabiting a continually mediated self.  In answer to
damaging socially-constructed beauty standards, her figures disintegrate, limbs distort, paint melts into skin and glances confront in discord.  Pfarr received her MFA in Painting & Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University and her BFA from D.A.A.P. at the University of Cincinnati (1998, 2004). Additionally, she studied Post-Baccalaureate at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1999).  Awards include a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a Roswell A-I-R Grant, a Jentel Residency and a Puffin Foundation Grant.  Pfarr’s work has been the subject of one-person exhibitions at Angela Meleca Gallery, Columbus, OH; Modern Arts Midtown Gallery, Omaha, NE; Grizzly Grizzly Gallery, Philadelphia, PA. Her work has been included in thematic exhibitions including Human Form: An Enduring Inspiration, Ann Street Gallery, Newburgh, NY; The Ripple Effect, The Northern Virginia Fine Art Association, Alexandria, VA; Inception, SCA Contemporary Art, Albuquerque, NM. Her work is included in the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art and many private collections. She lives and works in New Jersey and is an Adjunct Professor of Art at The College of New Jersey.
