Description

Japanese mending and patching, called “Boro” or translated into English as “ragged” has been used for centuries to patch clothing, bags and even futon covers.   The richness of the work was increased by the mixing of patterns and textures in the patching and mending of holes, tears and wear.   Learn to stitch patches in the Boro method to create your own individualized garment, bag or decorative pillow cover.  Be inspired and relax in this very hands on method of patchworking and hand stitching.

Materials list:

½ yard of fabric, or a garment, or a pillow cover, etc.  to repair/or patch
Sashiko Thread available on Amazon (embroidery thread or thick thread will work, too)
Sashiko or darning needle also available on Amazon (needs to have needle eye large enough for the thread choice)
Fabric scraps (denim and canvas make great patches).  See “Boro stitching” on Pinterest for ideas

Washable glue stick
Scissors-should be new or have never cut paper (paper dulls scissors)
Chalk wheel or tailor’s chalk and ruler (for drawing lines on fabric for stitching)

Fusible webbing (optional) depending on project
