Description

Join us on a meditative journey into the heart of African and Latin rhythms in which we will play beginner and intermediate drum patterns on djembe and congas. We’ll also practice basics of bass drum and bell independent hand patterns. You will be encouraged to work at your own pace to gain the physical, mental and emotional benefits of a mindful drumming practice. We will experience drumming from the inside out exploring how proper body alignment, hand technique and breathing will benefit your mind and body.


Fall Session will include:

- Basic and intermediate hand drumming techniques for djembe

- Basic Dun (bass drums) and Bell patterns.

- Rudiments and Rolls (practice patterns)

- Popular West African and some Latin based rhythms, polyrhythms and solo phrases

- Correct drumming posture and alignment

- Relaxation techniques including yogic breathing and gentle stretching


About the Teaching Artist: Timothy Robinson also known, as Dia Diop by his drum associates is eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. James Robinson, is local artist here in Trenton.  Timothy has been in the creative arts practically all his life. He has performed in many different capacities from: Stage Theatre and lighting and sound designs, Gospel and Classical Recording Groups, Black College Marching Bands, Professional Dance and many other areas.

 

African Drum and Dance was introduced to him 15 years ago and has been a vital point in his life and has helped teach our youth about the moral aspects of their lives as it has assisted him in his life. He’s performed all over the country with friends and associates alike. He’s been taught by some of the most famous Afrikans and African Americans in and out of the USA.  He has studied music at Knoxville College and UT in Knoxville, TN and Mercer County Community College.
